Sadly, it seems that college officials at the University of Colorado have shut down a game of Humans vs. Zombies. They are arguing that there’s the potential for confusion because a Nerf gun could be mistaken for a real gun. Yes, those over-sized, orange and yellow toys that shoot giant, foam darts might be mistaken for a real gun.

For those who don’t know, Humans vs. Zombies is the game where teams are made up of people who are the infected zombies and people who are they human survivors. They battle throughout campus to either survive or feed. Nerf guns tend to be the weapons of choice for fighting off the zombie hordes.

All in all, sounds like a perfectly fun way to spend your time – and at least they’re outside. amiright?

A new research paper has been released, providing a mathematical model for how a quickly zombie infection will spread (answer: pretty quickly) and how it would impact the surviving humans (answer: pretty badly).

It’s an interesting read, created by a team of actual mathematicians from the University of Ottawa. I confess to not really understanding all of the math they present, which is why you can find Io9′s review of the document at the link below. That being said, their summation of the solution says it best:

Science has proved it: aim for the head, and kill without mercy.

And perhaps I will speak of this comic some more at a later date. But for now, I want to bring up some very exciting news:

The Walking Dead will soon be a television series on the AMC network! With Frank Darabont as the driving force behind the show – acting as writer, director and executive producer!

This is guaranteed to be appointment viewing, so keep your eyes peeled to the screen – this will be something that needs to be seen!

We’ve posted this sort of thing before, but another college is heavily involved in the campus-wide game of “Humans vs. Zombies.”

This time, at Ball State University, they’ve created missions and a plot, making this a little more than just running around shooting people with nerf guns.

“We have reintroduced a reward and consequence system that gives everybody equal advantages and hopefully motivates more people to play,” [Faruq] Abdurrasheed [, administrator of the game,] said.

My predictions:

1) The zombies will win. The Zombies always win.

2) The game will eventually devolve to a bunch of people just running around shooting each other with nerf guns (which is okay).

The students at Goucher College, near Baltimore, Maryland, have taken a simple game of tag and turned it into a phenomenon.

Humans vs. Zombies is the game that seems to sweeping college campuses nationwide. Started in 2005, by Gloucher student, Christopher Weed, the game involves people playing zombies and people as the humans fighting for survival. The weapon of choice: Nerf guns.

The popularity of the game has spread like a rage virus* across college campuses. In some cases, the idea of students stalking around campus pretending to kill each other (or eat their brains) has led to the game being banned. Other schools have placed limits on whether students can use fake guns. Because of that, how can you not like Glucher College’s President for supporting, though not necessarily endorsing, Humans vs. Zombies:

“If I thought that banning Humans vs. Zombies at Goucher College would end violence in America tomorrow, then I would consider doing it,” Ungar said. “But it wouldn’t do that, and this (campus) is not a pit of violence because of this game.”

What really gets me though is that this game is now popular at my old Alma Mater, Northern Illinois University! I feel like I missed out on something really awesome simply by graduating several years too early.

In popular college game, students play Humans vs. Zombies – BostonHerald.com.

And to start your own game, check out the official Humans vs. Zombies site.

The brilliantly funny Simon Pegg writes and article for the Guardian, in which he discusses the inherent problems with a running zombie:

I know it is absurd to debate the rules of a reality that does not exist, but this genuinely irks me. You cannot kill a vampire with an MDF stake; werewolves can’t fly; zombies do not run. It’s a misconception, a bastardisation that diminishes a classic movie monster.

He goes on at some length on the merits of a slow moving zombie and the reasons why a zombie is not capable of achieving great speeds.

While I certainly enjoy the idea of a fast zombie, this article is terribly funny and the logic (nevermind that he’s discussing zombies) is sound and definitely worth a read.
